Organizing Literacy Programs

Chapter 9 is a great chapter if a teacher needs help developing ideas that will help every student in the classroom learn certain material. The first step to making a classroom  successful is establishing an environment that is very positive and productive for students. If a student does not feel comfortable in a classroom and he or she doesn't feel like she can share their ideas not a lot of success will happen in the class room.
The chapter also talks about content-area centers which will be in my future classroom. When it comes to language arts  course a literacy or writing center will be beneficial for students to understand what is being taught by the teacher. I do believe that these two centers should be private for students that want to read or write on their own. If a student is anything like me I hate reading in front of people and I hate writing in front of people. Some students like to be in groups. If a student learns better in a group then a group should be available for the student to be apart of. I really like the idea of content-area centers in a classroom. It allows the student to understand the theme that is being presented or taught through different subjects. What is your opinion on content-area centers?

  1. Hi Ozzie! I really like the idea of content-area centers. A literacy center will be a must in my future classroom as well. And I understand needing privacy to read and write. I always needed to have my space to read alone because otherwise I would get distracted and honestly I still do. I talked about in another post how my second grade teacher had a loft you could climb up into and read alone. This was basically my safe place, I loved how homey it felt and how well I could concentrate. My only thing about incorporating all of the content-area centers is that a classroom may not realistically be large enough. So I think it is really important to manage the space you are given. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I really enjoy the idea of content-area centers especially a literacy center since that is what the chapter focused on. I think students should have group time as well as individual time to work on their assignments as well. Especially students who do not enjoy reading out loud in front of other students. Students need to have a safe place to read or work on their assignments whether that is at their desk or in a reading corner. And as a teacher, it is our responsibility to do that. With that being said, it is crucial for us as teachers to provide that safe learning space for our students.

  3. Great post Ozzie! I agree that chapter nine is full of great ideas and tips on how to organize a classroom to benefit our students. Comfort is very important to children so if they are uneasy about their surroundings then they are not going to let you as a teacher into their mind. I liked your point on content-area centers and their importance. It is important to cater to the students needs like you said because you didn't like to read or write in front of others and a lot of students are like that. We as teachers need to provide them with the option of working alone if that makes them comfortable or working in a group if they learn better that way. Thank you for the post!

  4. Ozzie, I also believe that this is a great chapter full of great ideas on organizing the classroom to benefit the students. I also agree that the environment needs to be comfortable for the students. Like you said if the students are not comfortable, then they students will be less inclined to share ideas. I am like you and will always prefer to read by myself over reading in a group. While I know reading in groups can be helpful so I will still include that in my classroom, I think that having them private for students who want to read by themselves is a good idea.
