Learning Theorists and Literacy Approaches

As I was reading chapter one, I found that I loved learning about the many different learning theorists. This is a chart that compares many different theorists, some we have read about and others that we have not read about. It groups them by key concepts, learning paradigm or ‘world views’, and their scientific disciplines, and then it describes the theories.

This animated video shows what Piaget and Vygotsky might have said to each other if they had the chance to talk to each other. They explain their theories, and try to convince the other that their point of view is correct. I like it because it explains concepts that they believe in.

This is a video by Dr. Andy Johnson of Minnesota State University. In the video, Dr. Johnson really goes over the differences between Reading Readiness and Emergent Literacy and mentions theorists that believed in these. He talks about problems that each might have. Dr. Johnson also goes over some teaching skills in a child-centered approach.

  1. Thanks for sharing these helpful resources. They really clear up some of the confusing points of the various theories. The chart is very comprehensive and will be a reference I save, even having studied the theories extenisively.
